Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
