The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
